I am looking to invest long-term (20+ years) and this is my first time buying stocks. I have a medium to high risk tolerance. I will be initially investing $2500. The goal is growth for retirement fund.
Wondering how many different stocks to buy with my $2500.
Also, what would you say are good markets/industries to buy into now for maximum growth over the next 20 years?
I already have mutual funds… so I’m hoping to get into something with more potential payback (realizing the added risk also).

To absolutely minimize your individual risk, the theoretical number is 20. Beyond that the risk reduction of added stocks is minimal. But with only 2500 you can not begin to approach that, but it is a goal. The fact that you currently have mutual funds does mitigate your risk somewhat. As one responder mentioned when you have more than 10 it becomes somewhat of a task keeping track of them. And with 10 your individual risk is only slightly more than at 20. I attempt to keep my portfolio below 20 but by tracking the portfolio with Yahoo, it becomes much more managable to track a larger number of stocks.
google_color_text = "000000";

google_color_url = "000000";
//-->

The key is not only having say 10 different stocks but they should also be distributed amongst various segments of the economy and across various economies (read countries).

What are good markets/industries for the next 20 years?

Think about India, China, oil, health care. An excellent way to invest in oil with a small amount of money is to purchase an ETF, such as PXE or XLE or IYE or VDE or IEO or PXJ or USO. XLE is the most popular.

For China there is also an ETF: PGE or FXI

Regretably there is not yet an ETF of Indian stocks but there are about 12 or 16 traded on the NYSE. There are a couple of closed end funds that specialize in Indian stocks.

For health care there is these ETFs: XLV, IBB, PPH, BBH, IHY, PJP, IHE, IHF, IHI, XPH, XBI. Seems like there are more ETFs than there are companies. ha ha.

Please tell me your current home owner rates and monthly cost please include where you live. If you have websites or links that would help me get accurate rates for todays economy that would help too! Thanks!

Check Zillow.com. This will give you regional home values. I would not advise anyone to answer with home values, rates and payments on an open forum like Yahoo Answers. For acurate rates, check Yahoo Finance.

It seems nearly impossible to pay off old credit card debt and save money. Are there any good budgets/formula’s in order to pay off debt, stay debt free, and still save some money to travel or buy a house? My first plan of winning the lottery is not working out so well…
Thanks!

This worked for me when I first started out on a budget- maybe it’ll click with you, too:

1.) Figure out how much money you need to cover mandatory expenses. (Rent, electric bills, basic groceries, credit card minimum monthly payments, etc.) Keep this much money in your checking account each month.

2.) Look at the amount of money you have coming in that is in addition to your mandatory expenses. This will combine to be your savings money, your pay-off-that-credit-card-debt money, and your fun money. Maybe your amount is $600- you could put $200 in each category.

3.) Pay yourself first- I would set up both a short-term emergency fund, and a permanent retirement savings fund. Even if you think you have too much debt to save for retirement right now, I think it is very important to begin, at whatever level! If your employer offers a 401(k) with a match, enroll, even if it is only at 1%! Once you see how easy 1% is, you will be motivated to bump it up until the next thing you know, you’re saving 10% of your paycheck, which is a great goal.

You should also have an emergency fund so that the next time the car breaks down, you don’t have to put it on the credit card. Choose a high-yield savings account. I do mine online through ING Direct- you get 4.5% interest at the moment, and it’s really easy to set up automatic deposits from your checking account. Even if you can only do $30 a month, you will still have $360 at the end of the year. If you can do more, fantastic! This emergency fund can double as your home buying fund, or fund for whatever other short-term financial goals you have.

4.) Now, to pay down the credit card debt. If you have multiple cards, look at the statements and see which one is charging you the highest interest rate. That is the one you want to focus on paying down first. Of course you will need to make the minimum payment on all of them to protect your credit score, but whatever amount you can pay above the minimums, put towards the one with the highest rate. You’ve got to do this- it will take years and years to pay them off if you only pay the minimum!

5.) About those credit cards- put them in a big Ziploc bag, and fill it with water. Now, shove the whole bag in your freezer. This way, if you have a genuine emergency, you have your cards, but it will be a lot harder to make any impulse buys.

6.) Whatever amount you designated for fun money, take it out in cash. If you are going to buy something you want, as opposed to something you need, pay cash for it. If you have cash in your wallet, you can buy it. If you don’t, you can’t- it’s as simple as that. At the same time, if you have cash, you can buy it without feeling one bit guilty about it!

When I first started budgeting, I beat myself up so much over every single purchase, I was pretty miserable. This method finally allowed me to stick to a budget and feel happy about myself.

OK so i just downloaded a tool to help start a budget for me and my husband i want to stop working and stay home with our 7 month old baby. According to the tool after everything is paid for the month we will have 24% of our monthly income left over. which is about 550 dollars. I am curious if you think that im being selfish or if maybe that isnt enough of left over money at the end of the month? In my budget i included food, gas, credit cards, rent, utilities, household items ect.. so that 24% is really extra money. My husband is freaking out and i think hes overreacting, please let me know what you think and if there are guidelines you should follow when setting up a budget

thanks in advance

i know this is the wrong category really but i always get good answers here

I think it’s important to also account for emergency expenses as well. Such as a vehicle breaking, your child getting sick…things like that. Also, keep in mind that you really can live off of less money. My husband and I combined make about $9000 monthly, and I save $7000 every month. I do this by putting all of the money into our savings account and allowing $300 weekly to live off of. We usually have lots left over for the next week and then it goes back into savings. Just think about what you are going to buy and if you really need it. Everything always works out in the end Also, good on you for staying home with your child.

Good luck and congrats!
